Why I Love Camp GetAway

No, it isn't because it makes money (put a pencil to it and you will realize, this is a labor of LOVE, girlfriend). I love Camp GetAway. And many of our alums sure love it, too. Here are some reasons why:

1. It is quiet. Peacefully, blissfully quiet. No TV. No traffic noise. No kids.
2. It is healthy. The air is delicious. The food is hearty. The water is divine.
3. The company is great. Women, lots of happy women. Without men to interrupt or need our attention. Or pets that need walking. Or other family members who always seem to NEED something.
4. Simple pleasures and basic fun. Crafts, if you want. Hikes, even if you aren't an athlete. Yoga just to stretch the ol' bod a bit.
5. Talking. With friends and with strangers. Talking about things that will NEVER get back to anyone. Talking for hours. Girl talk. Women talk. Ahhh, talking.
6. No talking. Just sitting. Reading. Walking. Thinking. Breathing.
7. It is youthful. Yes, we sleep on bunks. Yes, we play some light games. Yes, we SING and DANCE. And it is absolutely wonderful.
8. Good food cooked by someone else. And no dishes to clean afterwards.
9. Delicious coffee made from delicious mountain spring water. Deeeelicious.
10. Chocolate.

How to Keep Your Cool at Camp

It’s California, and autumn weather in the mountains can be tricky to predict. Typically in October, days are on the warmer side and nights on the chilly side! What does that mean to your packing list? Daytime shorts AND nighttime sweatpants. Hiking shoes ‘n socks for outdoor activities, of course. But uggs for after-activity kicking back always welcomed.

Basically, if you plan for DIS-comfort, you'll be the most comfortable of all. In October, Patti brings a down sleeping bag to snooze warmly and lightweight jammies if it's cooler than usual. If you have a tiny personal fan, throw that in the car, too.

Remember that massage oil and magical facial potions will also make you slightly grimier. Hey, it's camp! Don’t bother with a hairdryer if a slicked-back ponytail or headband will do. Drink lots of water whenever you are in the mountains, and wearing a hat or visor during outside activities in the sun strongly advised.

Part of the fun of Camp is letting our hair down and being in the moment. Whether it’s picture-perfect weather or a touch on the challenging side, being flexible and prepared will ensure your weekend results in happy memories.

Send an Enlisted Serviceman's Wife to Camp -- 2009!

See these happy campers? They are married to American servicemen. They live on the Camp Pendleton base. They feed, clothe and keep their families running on a military salary (if you think teachers are underpaid, hooo boy, you cannot imagine). In 2008, we hosted close to two dozen wives of servicemen for free, and it made all of US feel WONDERFUL. Such incredible women, we wish everyone had a chance to meet and play with them. October Camp, we want to send more for FREE again. But our own budget is tight as usual (OK, whose isn't??), so we are asking our readers if they would like to pitch in just a tad. $15. is our request. That's it. More is obviously great. Less is fine, too. For every 10 campers that respond, we will make up the rest so another military wife can attend. We are sorry to report that Camp GetAway is not a "charitable organization," so there is no tax writeoff for your gift, but we hope you will gain the benefit of just knowing how much your contribution means to the Enlisted Wives Club.

Addicted to Archery

She said, "Follow your bliss." Q. When do registrations sell out?
A. We honestly never know. Every Camp is different; some book up earlier than others.

Q. Can I make a deposit to hold a space?
A. Sorry, only full payment secures a spot.

Q. How many campers in a cabin?
A. Cabins have several configurations, averaging 4 to 6 bunkrooms. Bunkrooms sleep up to 8 campers. We use a secret formula to do cabin assignments that only Fearless Leader is privy to. Believe us, you spend very little time inside cabins, everything FUN is happening throughout Camp. The bathrooms ARE indoors, the showers ARE private and the water IS hot.

Q. I'm lactose-intollerant, will I have a problem?
A. Your registration form asks campers to list any food issues, so that we can accommodate. For "weight loss" focused campers, there are plenty of healthy food choices at each meal.

Q. I don't have anyone to join me, will I fit in attending solo?
A. We always have solo travelers, no worries. And to be honest, once groups get here, they often split in several directions, too.

Q. Can I book spa treatments closer to the Camp date?
A. Sure. Registered campers receive materials in the mail that allow you to add spa treatments later, if available. We add spa staff based on pre-paid appointments.

Q. I have special needs due to a disability. Can you accommodate?
A. Yes, we can. Contact Patti directly at 310-471-3138 x 105 to discuss so the proper cabin, parking, etc. can be assigned.

Q. Are there discounts for groups?
A. Everyone pays the same rate. Keep an eye on the Early Bird Discount deadline.

Q. I'm a brand new mommy, still pumping. Advice?
A. All bunkrooms have electrical outlets, and the lodge has a camper 'fridge, so you can store until time to go home.

Q. We have friends who want to attend, but cannot pay yet. Can we save spaces?
A. Bunks are reserved by paid registration. However, your registration form does ask for a list of requested bunkmates, so we can watch for named campers' anticipated registration to keep groups together.

Q. Our group wants to funnel everything through one contact, how do we do this?
A. Each camper MUST submit her own online registration, for liability reasons. If one person wants to submit payment for the group, have her email Patti@CampGetAway.com for a special invoice. Each paid camper receives her registration packet in the mail.

Q. How can I "surprise" my sister with a gift of Camp GetAway weekend?
A. Every camp, we have a few surprise attendances (last camp, we had THREE). Email Patti@CampGetAway.com to arrange submission of her registration form, and where to mail her registration packet.

Q. When do we know the day and time of our spa appointments?
A. Campers with FRIDAY appointments are emailed a week before Camp. All other appointments are in your welcome envelope.

Q. Can I bring my dog?
A. Only service animals may attend.

Mmmmm, Camp Quiche is Yumm-o!

Women like quiche. We like how fun it is to use different ingredients and the fact that you pretty much cannot screw it up. Men and kids like it because it's pretty dang delicious. At Camp, Sunday brunch featured deeeelicious homebaked quiche. Here's that recipe:

Camp GetAway Quiche
Each serves 6

1 9-inch pie shell, thawed (Camper Cathi strongly recommends Marie Calendar* brand, so we never stray)
4 eggs
1 cup milk
1 cup shredded cheese (Jack, cheddar, your choice)
1 tsp. seasoning of your choice -- Italian, Mexican, salt & pepper

Then pick 2-3 of such ingredients, NOT ALL:

1 pkg. (10 oz) frozen chopped spinach or broccoli, thawed and drained
1 can (4.5 oz) sliced mushrooms, drained
3/4 can (14 oz) diced tomatoes, drained - a full can is too much
3 slices cooked bacon, crumbled
1/2 cup cooked chicken, turkey or sliced sausage
Any other veggie you think sounds yummy, like bell pepper or chopped onion

Preheat oven to 375 degrees F. In pie shell, place your choice of ingredients from the bottom list. Top with cheese. In separate bowl, use a fork or whisk to blend together the eggs and milk. Carefully pour over the ingredients and use a fork to shift contents around a little so egg mix seeps thru. Place in oven on a cookie sheet or foil (it usually spills a bit) and bake 35 minutes. Wiggle the quiche to see if the middle is set, if not, bake another 5 to 10 min. When brown and set, remove from oven and let stand for 10 minutes before slicing.

* these come in packages of 2 pie shells. Make two quiches by doubling recipe. Sometimes we have extra ingredients, so we make a THIRD crustless quiche, known as a fritatta. MMMM. GREAT in the mountains, high altitude doesn't seem to affect it.

Fun Seekers vs. Fun Suckers

Listening to a Satellite Sisters podcast the other day, the subject of "fun seekers versus fun suckers" was covered, which is a fairly appropriate topic for our campers. Camp is a place where you literally see attitudes adjust in front of your own eyes. Picture Friday check-in... a steady stream of burned-out gals who've had a hectic week and usually a tough commute to get here. Winding down isn't easy for full-speed-ahead women, and hesitancy about "what have I gotten myself into??" also contributes to the afternoon's buzz. But a hearty dose of gourmet chow blended with fresh girltalk launches the relaxation process. By our first official activity -- the Mixer & Mingler -- fun-SEEKING has begun. What happens after that... stays at camp!

Camp Offers Getaway for Marine Wives

Me-Time Ahead. No stress. No makeup. No men. The handpainted signs leading through the pine forest to the lodge in the San Bernardino Mountains make the mission of Camp Getaway clear to each of the 85 women arriving for the weekend. They’ve come from all over the state and as far away as Chicago. Some are there to celebrate decades of being Best Friends Forever, others have been given the weekend as a surprise gift from their husbands. Determined to savor every moment of me-time are six members of Camp Pendleton’s Enlisted Wives Club.
Veronica Duran grins as she reads the list of activities. Canoeing. Tie Dye Clinic. Cinematherapy Chick Flicks. Belly dance class. “I’m just looking forward to that facial, to closing my eyes and doing nothing,” she says.
Veronica isn’t used to doing nothing. An active volunteer and board member of the EWC, she has a five-year old daughter and works full time. “I work and I work and I work. That’s how I do it, that’s how I hold onto my sanity. When your husband is gone so much you have to keep busy or you’ll go crazy.”
She and her husband, Staff Sgt. Carlos Duran, were neighbors when they were kids in South Central LA. He teased her, she hated him and their parents joked that one day they’d fall in love and get married. They did. Twelve years later they’re still together, at least when he’s not deployed.
"People keep asking if it gets easier each time he has to go away. No. It gets harder. Each time it hurts more,” she says.
Veronica’s husband has been deployed five times since their daughter was born: once to Japan, once to Egypt and three times to Iraq, where he was injured by shrapnel when his vehicle was hit by a roadside bomb and then again when a rocket-propelled grenade hit his campsite.
“It’s been hard, very hard. But the good thing about living on base is that you can always find somebody who’s been through what you’re going through – whatever it is.”
When their daughter was a toddler Veronica bought a cardboard playhouse and plastered it with photos of her dad. “Whenever he came home I took millions of pictures so she’d have something to remember him by. But still she’d go up to strange men and say ‘Daddy!’ It was embarrassing.”
Veronica uses the word grateful a lot – she is grateful to be living on base, grateful for the support of the EWC. And she keeps repeating how grateful she is to have been given the gift of this weekend.
For the second time this year, Patti Londre, Camp Getaway’s “Fearless Leader” has made it possible for a group of Camp Pendleton spouses to attend the camp free of charge.
“They are the unsung heroes. They do so much for others and so little for themselves,” she says. “A weekend of fun and relaxation is almost unheard of for the wives of deployed soldiers.”
When the camp’s yoga teacher Jennifer Mumford saw Patti’s email requesting donations to bring another group of military wives to camp, she forwarded it to her mother, Florence Patrick.
“I know what they’re going through,” Florence said to her daughter. Her husband had served in Vietnam and the memories of worrying about him when he was away at war and having to take care of her home and family on her own are still fresh. She was glad she could do something to support this new generation of military wives.
Campers chat in front of the crackling fireplace, their feet up on a huge coffee table that spills over with magazines. Others sit around tables playing Monopoly and sipping Mad Housewife wine. “Oh baby baby it’s a wild world,” Cat Stevens croons in the background.
During dinner Ann Marie Brysiak calls home to check on her three kids. Her 15 year old son assures her all is well – that he’s even bathed his little brother. Ann’s jaw drops. “I guess I shouldn’t be surprised. He’s used to being the man of the house. I feel guilty because I count on him way more than I should.”
Ann Marie’s husband, Gunnery Sgt. Ed Brysiak, has been deployed to Iraq since January. He has four more months to go until he’s back home. In 2007 he was deployed to Mongolia for six months and to Djibouti Africa from July 2004 until February 2005.
There isn’t a day that her five year old doesn’t wake up and ask if his dad’s coming home, but it’s CJ, her 15 year old she worries about the most. She worries about all the teenage sons of deployed fathers.
“They are growing up without strong male role models. There’s so little for the teenagers on Camp Pendleton to do. I took CJ go-carting but of course it wasn’t the same.”
Like Veronica, Ann’s speech is peppered with the word “grateful” and she says she never takes any of the privileges of living on base for granted. Right before camp she flew to Washington DC where she was recognized by Marine Headquarters Group for her volunteer work with military families. Her next project, she says, is to create programs for the teenage boys of deployed fathers.
After dinner everyone belts out songs from their pink Super Duper Singalong books, followed by a funny-and-embarrassing- story-telling competition. Two of the Enlisted Wives, Jennifer Dipper and Ann Martinez, have the other campers shrieking with laughter.
“Woo, she’s good. She should think about doing stand-up,” one of the campers comments when Jennifer delivers her punch-line.
Jennifer's husband Sgt. Erik Dipper was an aircraft mechanic before going into Camp Pendleton’s Wounded Warrior Battalion where he is being treated for post traumatic stress disorder and possible traumatic brain injury. He served in Okinawa for 13 months and was then deployed twice to Iraq for seven months each time.
Jennifer says her husband takes great pride knowing that each Huey and Cobra he worked on was ‘Mission Capable.’ Now medically non-deployable, Sgt. Dipper wants to be an advocate and support other injured Marines.
“The service and sacrifice doesn’t end when a Marine comes home,” she says. “The whole family must readjust to the changes and affects that have occurred as a result of the last deployment. Support is key to our families surviving the physical, mental and emotional challenges.”
Jennifer is an artist and has brought two tiny t-shirts to camp so she can tie-dye them for their one year old daughter.
“You look so relaxed. Your skin is glowing,” Brandi Porter tells Elizabeth Sparks who has just come back from her facial. One of the campers donated a facial treatment to each of the Enlisted Wives.
“Really?” Liz blushes and touches her cheek.
They’re sitting at a table with other campers making beaded key chains. Liz’s keychain says SEMPER FIESTY and Brandi’s PROUD USMC WIFE.
Brandi, who has a smile as broad as her Texas accent, is the only Enlisted Wives Club member who doesn’t live at Camp Pendleton. Her husband is stationed at Miramar Airbase where she teaches ‘Marine Corps 101’ – to other Marines spouses.
Most people are aware that deployments are hard on a marriage, she says, but few realize that recruiting duty can be even harder. Brandi has survived both scenarios and doesn’t know what she would have done if she hadn’t been able to call her mother and wail into the phone for the three years that her husband was a recruiter and left for work at 5 a.m. and only got home after 10 pm – six days a week.
She has a plaque on her living room wall that reads, “Home is where your Marine is.”
Liz’s husband is home on base, watching their two young sons. Before his seven month deployment to Iraq – their older son was two at the time -- they were stationed in Japan for three years. He was deployed for one and a half years of that time while she remained in Japan.
Liz makes and sells clothes to the other Marine wives on base. “I have been sewing since I was about four years old. I used to watch my momma sew and then I would make a copy for my dolls,” she writes on her MySpace blog. “In Japan it was difficult for the other wives to find ball gowns in their size (for the Marine Corps Birthday Ball) so I started making them dresses…. and here I am with Littlebits Fashions.”
Late that night, flashlights in hand, the Marine wives crunch their way across a bed of pine needles to their cabin.
“It’s so quiet,” whispers Veronica as she crawls into her wooden bunk. “I hope I’ll be able to sleep.”
By the closing ceremony on Sunday the six women have canoed, belly-danced, re-connected with their inner smore-makers, soaked in the hot tub and giggled in their bunks until the early hours of the morning. They’ve won the TV Land Fun Dinner costume contest as Gilligan’s Island and tied for first place with another group in the Scavenger Hunt competition. When Brandi gets the Camp Cheerleader award, the other Marine wives yell “Oorah!”
Then, one by one they stand and fight back tears as they express their gratitude to Patti and the other staff and campers.
“I cannot thank you enough. This weekend has made me feel like a child again,” says Ann Martinez. Her husband, Lance Cpl. Martinez is returning from Iraq in a week.
“My husband called from Iraq this morning,” says Ann Brysiak. “He wants me to thank all of you for this weekend.” Tears roll down her cheeks. “He says that when he knows I’m being appreciated and taken care of it makes it so much easier to do his job. He wants you all to know how thankful he is.”

1. Read all your attendance materials when you receive them, don’t wait until a few days before the getaway. Helpful info pops out at you. For example, for a camp in the mountains, a minor but very important detail is bringing a really strong flashlight, since its pitch dark after sundown.
2. Pack an additional small table lamp. Yes, the lighting in your crop room may be perfect. Or no, you may find yourself wishing for a little more light directed specifically on your spot. Your own lamp, put it where you want.
3. Pack and bring… everything. Heck, why not? You can always leave a bunch of stuff in your car, but what if you finish your first AND second projects and really wish you had the photos for your third? Fill ‘er up.
4. No need to pre-purchase “just in case” supplies. Just bring your checkbook. Supplies abound at these retreats and there is usually something you see you’d like to use in your project. Buy it on-site.
5. Don’t panic when you first arrive. The natural tendency is to feel overwhelmed with all you wish to accomplish and fearful that you won’t reach your goals. No worries, once you are at your retreat, take a deep breath, wrap your head around what you want to do FIRST and start. SECOND comes right after that. You will be amazed at how much you accomplish.
6. Treat yourself to massages or wine tasting or hikes while there. A retreat is just that – getting away from your daily routine. Added activities will greatly enhance your experience and return you to your family refreshed, but also having accomplished your big goal, massive cropping.
7. If you don’t have a cropping buddy to attend with you, come solo. Women are women, and within a short amount of time, fellow croppers are your girlfriends. No loneliness happens at these retreats.

Tie-Dye Dilemna

OK, you've arrived at Camp, having packed your 3 items to tie-dye, you look at the itinerary and FREAK because there are so much to do, how to get it all in?? Here's a little help:

Friday nite is the TIE clinic. Relaxing time to twist, knot, rubber band.
Tieing takes much longer than dying.
Saturday, we dye practically all day, DON'T WORRY, you have plenty of time.
Look at your Saturday schedule and decide which other things to do. Then, find an hour in there to drizzle your dyes.
Don't fret if you cannot get to the craft sink to rinse. Just leave your knotted, colored thing right there and go play!! Come back later to rinse and hang dry. Just PLEASE NO RINSING IN CABINS. Patti has taken full-dye things home and rinsed there.
Weather permitting, we'll leave clotheslines up over night for more drying. If yours is still damp, remove the rubber bands, stick in a plastic bag and finish at home.

In the washing machine, yup -- unzip, stuff it in, add a SMALL amount of detergent, run on cold or warm, the machine won't be able to totally spin out the water (be close by in case it gets off-balance), then be prepared to RUN with a drippy thing to hang on the line. NANO-NAP: 10-20 seconds. Sleep studies haven’t confirmed specific benefits to these brief intervals. However, if you aren't the driver, nod off on the way up the mountain and give us report when you arrive.

Congrats, Camper Katie, for accomplishing 62 (yes, sixty-two) beautiful pages. In total, 262 pages were completed under masterful coaching of Scrapbook Kellie, whose delightful contests and plentiful supplies kept croppers at the top of their game. But it wasn't all work-work-work. While enjoying the company of friends and family, campers maximized opps for massages and tarot readings, soakin' in the hot tub, wine tasting, chick flicks, s'mores over the fire, hiking to the lake - OK, Patti completely missed and hiked her group to a point where they could SEE it, LOL. April 11-13 is the Spring camp, typically attended by overstressed, hard working women who can flee their homes for a long weekend and the family can get along without her.

May 16-18 Scrapbooking GetAway gives our campers a special weekend of 48 full hours to clip, crop, glue and RELAX. Who has enough time to scrapbook at home? This one is limited to 16 campers total.

September 19-21 is the Autumn camp, women who are grateful the summer is over, the kids are back in school, the household has its own routine and MOM IS OUTTA HERE.

Prep For A Home Evacuation, It Isn't Hard

While watching news of wildfires, it reminded me to share what could help your family have a well-orchestrated home evacuation.

Inside a cupboard in my home, I taped TWO clear binder sleeves with identical pages. One side is both of our evacuation assignments (two adults live here) and the other side is our list of insurance policy numbers and the agent’s key contact info.

I decided to grab things that would keep us moving forward for days or maybe weeks, not items like silverware or even photos. I don't have kids so I'm no help with what kids' stuff to bring, including where you draw the line on family treasures. Faced with an evacuation, I cannot guarantee that my thoughts would be clear, and without this, I can bet we’d be freaking more than packing.

Never sure how much time you have for an evacuation, I'd be pressed to get this all in my car within 15 minutes, but it's worth a shot. Grab a plastic sleeve, follow the list, kiss and GO. If only one of us is home at the time, fingers crossed but that is why both of our lists are on the same page. I urge you to make and post your list ASAP. Here is ours (PS we have a fireproof safe where we store passport and insurance papers, I saw on TV how firefighters cut into a melted safe and the owners' stuff was still intact so WHEW. We also put computer backups in our bank safe deposit box twice a year):

Things to Forget

Stressed-out campers, eager for a getaway may want to pack everything including the kitchen sink. And while it is important to remember the essentials, there are some items that are better to FORGET (in other words, leave at home):
Forget laptops. Electronic notepads may have replaced paper ones as something we rarely leave home without. But expensive electronics are the last thing to bring to Camp. Besides being somewhat dirty and grimy outdoors here, hanging out inside a cabin is crazy! Personal electronics, from laptops to blackberries, cut people off from others.
Forget jewelry. Easily lost or damaged during a busy weekend, earrings and rings can come loose and sink quickly to the bottom of a lagoon. Necklaces and bracelets may get snagged on branches during nature hikes or inadvertently drop off after a clothing change for a spa treatment.
Forget treasured accessories. Your new Fendi purse or Oliver Peoples sunglasses are just asking to land in a mud puddle or go overboard when canoeing. Or just as bad, gooped up with the stuff that are part of Camp weekend: massage oil, sunscreen, bug repellant, roasted marshmallows and mosaic craft grout!
Forget posh clothes. Pack wearables that can get dirty or lost, period. As with any vacation, if you pack hoping for the best and planning for the worst, you’ll not be heartbroken.
Forget inhibitions. Not everyone attended camp as a kid. As a result, it may be scary or unpleasant at first. But being surrounded by an army of very excited fellow campers is the perfect time to let your hair down. Try anything and everything, especially if it's something you would not normally try at home.

Are You Ready to Hit the Road? Not Yet….

Your safety and wellbeing are a priority to us. Most of us are city folk, used to having a gas station at the next off ramp, or an AAA truck right around the corner. Guess what… you’re heading up the mountains! Heaven forbid, you have an auto issue that you cannot handle (our last TWO camps each had a flat tire on a campers’ vehicle – ouch!).
Be smart and schedule your next auto service call in advance of Sept. 21 and make sure all is healthy on your vehicle.
1. Steep, narrow, winding roads, high altitudes and unpaved surfaces (such as Camp’s parking lot and on-site roadways) can put a vehicle through rigors it is unaccustomed to. While the Highway 38 up into the mountains is well-paved, hazards still do exist – from blind curves to rocks in the road to critters!
2. Cell reception can be sporadic, another reason to have a vehicle in tip-top shape.
3. Check your vehicle's brakes and replace worn pads to prevent brake fade when descending steep hills.
4. Have the engine, transmission and final drive checked manual to lessen the strain mountain driving will put on them. If fluid service is required, consider using synthetic fluids to protect the engine under variable weather conditions and produce better fuel economy.
5. Inspect the wiper blades and replace if necessary, as mountain climates are subject to sudden, filthy rainfall.
6. Check the battery for corrosion and remaining charge, as high engine temperatures caused by climbing steep terrain with heavy loads can wear a battery down.
7. Open that trunk to make sure you have a spare tire as well as tools for changing a flat.
8. Put a number of bottles of water in your car for drinking and snacks for emergency. If you get into trouble and a service vehicle is called, it may take a while to get there.

Six Tips to Prep for Camp

1. Go thru your Goodwill bag to resurrect shirts for Tie-Dye. Tie-Dye hides a LOT of sins – spots and yellow underarms seem to disappear. 100% cotton is best. Patti is going to try dying her well-worn white Keds, while we’re at it.
2. Patti says down sleeping bags are washable, she’s done it! Hot weather is the best time. Unzip the bag to open completely. Stuff it into your washing machine and run on delicate with a teensy bit of soap in warm water. Open the lid once or twice and shove it all under water if it’s poofing up. Once spun dry, it will still be pretty drippy. Hang outside in the heat of the day (on a clothesline, over chairs or some way for air to circulate), turn it a couple of times during the day. If still damp by sundown, bring inside and re-hang outside tomorrow. It will smell incredibly fresh.
3. Order “Skin So Soft” lotion from Avon – sunscreen, moisturizer and bug repellant in one really good product.
4. Clear out your camera memory card to not run out of space. The mountains are beautiful, and when friends are relaxed and refreshed, photos really reflect it. You’ll get the best shots if you shoot everything and delete at leisure.
5. When was the last time you READ a good book? Ask friends for a loaner, then grant yourself “me time” to gobble up a wonderful story.
6. Bag up magazines to bring. We have a “bring one, take one” table – once you’re done pouring thru yours, feel free to take a whole pile back home at the end of the weekend. Or rip them up right there on-site if you want that article or recipe… we ENCOURAGE it (how many times have you been at the doctor’s office and oh-so-quietly tore out a page? At Camp, let ‘er rip).

Top Ten Reasons to NOT Attend Camp

# 10 - I won’t know anyone.
We feel your pain, however, coming solo has some distinct benefits. For one thing, you can REALLY leave all your worries behind, because you're also leaving family, mom, sis, cousin, co-worker or neighbor behind. And one of the rewards of attending Camp is stretching beyond your comfort zone.
# 9 - I live too far away.
In 12 years, our campers have come from North, South, East and (obviously West) states, even Alaska. Last camp, we had a first-timer attend from New York!
# 8 - Isn’t this camp just for Moms?
Not at all! When first opened in 1996, it was called Camp Mom, but word got out so quickly how much fun we have, the name was soon changed to Camp GetAway – for all of us at all stages of life. Similar camps have popped up on occasion, but Camp GetAway is the Mother Of Them All.
# 7 – I’m not a camper.
Well, friend, this ain’t camping. It’s CAMP, big difference. Yes, it’s still in the mountains and yes, we have S’mores and sing-a-longs and hikes. But bathrooms are indoors, showers are blessedly hot, cabins are heated and delicious food is served on real plates with real utensils -- and NO placemats with crayons.
# 6 – I don’t think I’m physically able to keep up with others.
If by “keeping up” you mean laughing, talking, eating, singing, crafting, karaoke-ing and making friends, that’s hard to believe. But if you mean taking a 25-mile hike up a mountain, NOT HERE. # 5 – I'm on a budget.
Have you seen hotel prices lately? Where else can you get 2 nights lodging, all your meals, a cute souvenir t-shirt, tons of entertainment, professional speakers, creative crafts, outdoor activities, prizes and more for the such a low price?
# 4 – I'm not into playing games.
Don’t let the idea intimidate you….most of us don’t have any talents to brag about, but we can act a little silly and try something new if the chance arises. Or not. Being an audience member is also helpful here.
# 3 – I don’t have time to get away.
Who DOES? Free time doesn’t magically appear, you have to plan to get away! Tell your family this is "me time." Here, you get to relive some good ol’ days - staying up late, acting like teenagers, doing what you want to do.
# 2 – I didn’t go to Camp as a kid, I’m not sure I belong.
About half our campers never attended camp as a kid. But they sure love it now! A water balloon fight at THIS age is just as fun as at 12.
And the NUMBER # 1 EXCUSE NOT TO ATTEND CAMP...
# 1 – I don’t like to have FUN.

How to REALLY Reduce Stress

We promote the magical powers of Camp as stress-reducing and rejuvenating, but to be honest, there are some requirements on the campers’ part to ensure this happens. Most of the time, campers arrive in a stressed state, having finished a full week of work or home/family duties to endure a gridlocked drive to the base of the mountains.

And being typically busy, some campers have a tough time unwinding once here, so we offer these tips in advance to help you throw aside anxiety and turn into a nice blob of joyful jello as quick as possible.

Leave expectations at the bottom of the mountain. Camp GetAway is neither a spa nor a hotel. It is “camp,” like when we were kids. There can be things that, at least at the beginning, can throw new campers for a loop. Those who see the spirit of adventure in what they encounter here shed stress more quickly. It all depends on attitude. We once had a camper who literally SCREAMED obscenities at a raccoon in the trashbin, instead of marveling at its beauty. She never unwound that weekend, nor did anyone want much to do with her. Which is pretty sad. Pledge to yourself to give "unwinding" a real try.

Breathe. And we mean that. Take time to sit alone on a deck, slow down your pace, listen to the wind whispering in the pines, and really HEAR those wonderful birds. Watch chipmunks scurry. Put the mental brakes on, in other words.
Do everything, or do nothing. But don’t succumb to the notion that if you aren’t provided an activity every minute, that “camp” isn’t fun. This weekend is about being out of your element from home, escaping the drone of busyness and discovering “me time.” Ask friends for a recommended book and bring it just for you.
Take a break from your cabinmates. Split up for a couple of hours. Do things independently. With friends comes discussions of home issues, work issues, kid issues, relationship issues. Take a breather from all of that.
Regarding sleep... don’t fret. One (or possibly two) nights, you won’t get the "same" type of sleep as at home. Just like when you travel on vacation, sleep definitely IS important but that’s not the only reason you’re here. You’re here to OPEN your eyes just as much as CLOSE them. Thus, naps are highly encouraged here, too.
Enjoy fellow campers from all walks of life, and of all ages. Join a card game, sit with someone new at lunch, tie-dye with someone you wouldn’t know back home. We are ALL magnificent, incredible creatures with special characteristics you will never see unless you meet.
Give the cell a vacation. Put your cell on vibrate and ask your family to disconnect with you for the weekend. "Give peace a chance," in other words. Most problems back home can work themselves out without you, and if it is an emergency, there are plenty of ways to get a hold of you.
Abandon the temptation to TM. That’s not “transcendental meditation,” which we encouragae... it’s text messaging. Give it up this one weekend. Not only is it a high contributor to your stress, but watching you do it is stressful to the rest of us – seriously! Be “present” at Camp, be HERE, not there.
Treat yourself. A facial to remove the impact of stress from your face. A massage to liquefy your muscles. A manicure to make you smile each time you look at your hands once home. Try yoga for the first time, it’s wonderful. Wake up early to appreciate nature at a sleepy moment. A delicious cup o' joe awaits you at the lodge. Take a nap later to catch up on missed zzzzzzzz’s.
Make an agreement with yourself... to leave expectations, concerns, anxieties and fears at the bottom of the mountain. If you miss them terribly while at Camp, in less than 48 hours, you can pick them back up again on the way home.

Pack Up All Your Cares and Woes

We suggest these easy tips to make your Camp weekend a real success:

-- Read your registration packet as soon as you receive it to "wrap your head around the weekend." You'll have overall instructions, driving instructions, a suggested packing list plus some FORMS TO RETURN. Mail 'em in pronto.

-- At the same time, review the driving instructions to visualize your journey. Consider leaving EARLY on Friday (take the day off, you earned it!) for a more leisurely drive. Stop on the way for lunch. If you arrive at Camp prior to the 3 PM check-in, not a problem.

-- Pull out your sleeping bag a week or so before. No need to scramble at the last minute trying to find this less-used item.

-- Test your flashlight. Bet those batteries are dead!!

-- A few days before Camp, check weather.com for zip code "92305".

-- Load your car the night before. Remember bottled water. Fill the gas tank. And check to see that your spare tire is in good shape.

-- Don't forget to pack your SENSE OF ADVENTURE! Every Camp is a little different and the itinerary is "tweaked" practically up 'til you arrive (due to circumstances beyond our control sometimes), so leave your expectations at home and jump in!

Pampering How-To

Camp GetAway is the PERFECT place for a “first” massage or facial. Experienced clients give our gals top scores, too. Our pamperers are pros who put you at ease, they will walk you thru the process. No snobs here! They want you to have a comfortable experience, so talk to them.You are greeted at the waiting area, shown to a place to undress in private; once you are snugly under a clean, fresh sheet, they enter.

If there's anything you want worked on specifically, now is the time to say. Tight shoulders? Sore back? A massage therapist can do wonders. Is your skin sensitive or do you prefer certain types of facial products? Tell your esthetician now.When finished, you redress in private.

Are Massages Naked? Only if you want, it’s perfectly fine to leave undergarments on.

What About Facials? Our pros use plenty of fresh towels and sheets to cover body parts, so keeping a bra on is not a problem. You’ll want to remove your shirt, however, for lotions on neck and shoulders. Registered campers receive a full packet in the mail, which includes the appointment booking form for pamperings. Don't delay booking your spa treatment, many sell out before the weekend.
